Traffic Advisory: I-89 Closure at Exit 17 in Colchester for Bridge Work
COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Significant traffic disruptions are expected in Colchester as Interstate 89 will close in both directions at Exit 17 starting this Sunday night. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) announced that the closure, set to take place from November 17 to November 22, will occur nightly between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to facilitate the installation of reinforcements for the Route 2 bridge over I-89.
During the overnight closures, motorists will be rerouted using designated detour paths to ensure traffic flow remains as smooth as possible. Southbound drivers on I-89 will be required to exit at Exit 17, then turn left onto US-2 to immediately reconnect with I-89 via the southbound on-ramp. Conversely, northbound traffic will exit at Exit 16, proceed approximately 6.3 miles on US-2/US-7, and then re-enter I-89 via the on-ramp at Exit 17.
VTrans officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to the signs posted along the detour routes to navigate the area safely. They recommend planning ahead for additional travel time and exploring alternative routes where possible.
With this construction aimed at enhancing bridge safety and infrastructure, the temporary inconvenience will ultimately support improving the region’s transportation network. As always, updates will be provided as the project progresses.
Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing traffic conditions and visit VTrans’ official website for real-time updates.
