The Vermont Democratic Party recently fell victim to theft when $925 was fraudulently charged on their political committee debit card. Shockingly, the stolen funds were then deposited into a sports betting account on FanDuel. However, the party was able to recover the money from the bank. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident as numerous political fundraising committees have experienced theft over the past couple of years.
Among those affected were campaign committees for various politicians, including Rep. Jim Banks, a Texas Republican congressional candidate, and even the anti-Trump super PAC, The Lincoln Project. The thefts ranged from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, with some campaigns being targeted multiple times.
The issue of political campaign theft is bipartisan, as both Republican and Democratic committees have been victims. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s campaign and President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign committee were among those targeted. Even high-profile politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tulsi Gabbard had money stolen from their accounts.
In addition to individual campaigns, political action committees such as the Business Industry Political Action Committee and the State Farm Insurance PAC also reported thefts. This widespread issue has prompted investigations by the FBI and calls for increased cybersecurity measures to protect political funds from being stolen by scammers.
