Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company, UnitedHealth Group stated. There is no record that Mangione, 26, was ever insured by the company. Mangione is believed to have targeted Thompson because of the size and prominence of UnitedHealthcare, as indicated by his social media and writings. He was arrested in Pennsylvania with a gun, silencer, handwritten document referencing the health care industry, and a notebook discussing targeting a CEO.
The killing of Thompson, which was caught on security video, was targeted and believed to be premeditated. Mangione, who arrived in New York by bus on November 24, allegedly used a ghost gun made with a 3-D printer in the shooting. He is currently facing charges in Pennsylvania, including weapons charges and forgery, and is fighting extradition to New York, where he will be charged with murder in Thompson’s killing.
Mangione’s attorney has stated his intention to plead not guilty to all charges. The investigation into the motive and circumstances of the killing is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events leading up to Thompson’s death.
