The University of Vermont women’s hockey team faced off against Merrimack in a tough battle at Gutterson Fieldhouse, ending with a close 3-2 victory for Merrimack. Despite scoring two goals in the final five minutes of play, Vermont was unable to overcome Merrimack’s early 3-0 lead. Head Coach Jim Plumer commended the team for their effort and resilience, hoping they can carry that momentum throughout the next game.
Merrimack took the lead in the second period with goals from Sage Babey and Rachel Bjorgan, followed by another goal from Chloe Goofers in the third period. Vermont fought back with goals from Natalie Zarcone and Lara Beecher, bringing the score to 3-2 with less than two minutes left to play. Despite a penalty shot and a powerplay opportunity, Vermont was unable to tie the game, and Merrimack’s goalie made crucial saves to secure the win.
Key players for Vermont included Zarcone, Beecher, McKenzie Cerrato, and Kyla Bent, who all contributed to the team’s effort. Vermont outshot Merrimack 28-20 and showed strong performances in the faceoff circle. The team will have another chance to take on Merrimack in a rematch, with the game scheduled for the following afternoon.
