The University of Vermont men’s hockey team has announced their leadership group for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Will Zapernick and Joel Määttä will serve as captains, with Jens Richards as an alternate. Zapernick, in his fifth year with the team, led the Catamounts in blocked shots and was third in shots on goal last season. Coach Steve Wiedler praises his experience, work ethic, and dedication to the team.
Määttä, who has been an alternate captain for two seasons, will now wear the C as the 65th player in program history to do so. He is known for his two-way play and leadership on the ice. Meanwhile, Richards, who led the team in scoring last season, has shown significant development and skill both on and off the ice, earning him the alternate captain position.
The Catamounts will kick off their season on October 6 against McGill at Gutterson Fieldhouse, with the first 300 fans receiving a free UVM shirt. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Tickets are available at https://go.uvm.edu/ct6. For more updates on the Vermont men’s hockey program, fans can follow @UVMmhockey on social media and visit UVMathletics.com.
