For over 30 years, one man has been selecting the Christmas trees for Rockefeller Center

Every year since 1995, Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center, has been responsible for choosing the perfect tree for the plaza. The tree must be a Norway spruce that is at least 70 feet tall and 40 to 42 feet wide, sturdy enough to hold wires, cables, lights, and the star that tops it. Pauze looks for a tree with a beautiful shape, vibrant green color, and full branches that would be ideal for a Christmas living room. While his core responsibilities have remained consistent over the years, the process of selecting the tree varies annually. Pauze spends nearly every day of the year thinking about future trees, with the search for this year’s tree starting in July 2020. One day, he saw a perfect Norway Spruce while driving and approached the owner, Earl Albert, who generously agreed to donate the tree to Rockefeller Center. Overall, Pauze’s attention to detail and dedication to finding the best tree for the iconic holiday display at Rockefeller Center has made him an integral part of the annual tradition.
