The African Health Stories project is harnessing the power of generative AI to address the global health challenge of Type II Diabetes. With 10% of the population affected by diabetes worldwide, and 12.7% diagnosed in South Africa alone, the project aims to provide personalized lifestyle advice to improve health outcomes. By creating culturally and linguistically appropriate health stories, patients and providers can generate tailored advice throughout the diabetes journey. This innovative approach not only helps patients better understand and apply care advice to their lives but also addresses the limitations of generic advice and communication barriers in lower and middle-income countries.
Collaborating with Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, and Swansea University, the project is developing a story generation tool that uses generative AI technologies to produce interactive visual, oral, and text stories. By involving patients, medical professionals, and caregivers in the process, the project ensures a human-centered approach. The first iteration of the tool, informed by a co-design workshop in 2024, will be tested to address the key concerns and goals of patients in the Western Cape of South Africa.
With the goal of helping patients make lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of Type II diabetes and improve health outcomes, the African Health Stories project is pioneering a new way of delivering personalized health advice through the use of generative AI. By tailoring advice to individual needs and preferences and taking into account local circumstances, this initiative has the potential to make a significant impact on diabetes management in South Africa and beyond.
