Robinson discusses the need for relieving medical debt

The Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence is urging the Legislature to pass S.27, a bill that would eliminate up to $100 million in medical debt for low-income Vermonters and exclude medical debt from credit reports. The bill, brought forward by Sen. Ginny Lyons and Treasurer Mike Pieciak, aims to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence achieve economic security, better health outcomes, and a safer future.

Survivors of abuse often face financial barriers to safety and healing, with health care costs contributing to their vulnerability. The bill aims to address the significant financial loss experienced by survivors, with health care expenses being a major factor. Medical debt can lead to damaged credit, making it harder for survivors to secure housing, find employment, and escape abusive situations.

Studies show that survivors have higher health care costs even years after escaping abuse, and many Vermonters delay treatment due to fear of medical debt. This can lead to more serious health issues, higher future medical costs, and time away from work.

The Vermont Network believes that S.27 is an important investment in the safety, health, and prosperity of Vermonters. By eliminating medical debt and excluding it from credit reports, the bill aims to remove barriers that prevent survivors from moving forward with their lives. Sarah Robinson, co-executive director of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, urges the Legislature to support this critical bill.
