Vermont Supreme Court Associate Justice Karen Carroll has announced her retirement after more than eight years on the high court bench. Governor Phil Scott will have the opportunity to select another justice to join the five-member high court. Carroll, who was appointed to the bench in 2017, has had a long and successful legal career as a lawyer, prosecutor, and jurist. Her retirement in August will create an opening for Scott to appoint a new justice to the court.
Chief Justice Paul Reiber expressed gratitude for Carroll’s dedicated service to the state, noting her outstanding legal career and commitment to access to justice principles. Carroll previously served as a state superior court judge in criminal, civil, and family divisions in multiple counties. She also held positions in the Vermont attorney general’s office and as a deputy state’s attorney. In addition, Carroll played key roles on statewide committees and commissions, including chairing the Access of Justice Coalition.
Carroll’s retirement marks the end of an era on the Vermont Supreme Court, where she has made significant contributions to the legal system in the state. Her departure will leave a vacancy on the court that Governor Scott will need to fill, ensuring that the high court continues to operate effectively and efficiently.
