Officials warn that early action is crucial to prevent bear incidents throughout the spring and summer, as warmer temperatures and shorter winters are leading to earlier bear activity. Residents are advised to remove birdfeeders, store garbage in bear-resistant containers, follow composting guidelines, and install electric fences to protect animals like chickens and beehives. Feeding pets indoors and never feeding bears are also important precautions to take. Failure to do so can attract not only bears but also other wildlife like raccoons, skunks, and rodents.
The department is asking residents to report any bears engaging in potentially dangerous behavior through their Living with Black Bears web page, in order to intervene early and prevent conflicts. Purposely feeding bears is not only detrimental to the animals but also poses risks to humans and is illegal. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department also advises against feeding black bears in the Granite State.
