Bird strike causes FedEx flight to catch fire during takeoff from Newark airport

A FedEx cargo plane struck a bird during takeoff from Newark to Indianapolis, causing damage to one of the Boeing 767’s engines. The plane caught fire while in the air, but the crew was able to safely make an emergency landing back at Newark Liberty International Airport without any reported injuries to the three people onboard. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. Aviation expert John Cox reassured that planes like the Boeing 767 are designed to fly on one engine in case of mechanical failure, and pilots are trained to handle such situations for a safe landing. This incident is one of several recent aviation incidents that have made headlines, including a Delta Air Lines flight reporting smoke, an American Airlines flight diverting due to a bomb threat, and a Delta flight returning due to smoke in the galley. Despite these incidents causing some anxiety, Cox emphasized that airplanes are still the safest form of transportation compared to the risks of traveling on roads. The crew’s quick actions and response, as well as the standard safety procedures in place, contributed to the successful outcome of this incident.
