Two Pedestrians Critically Injured in South Burlington Truck Collision
South Burlington, VT – December 12, 2024 – A tragic incident on Wednesday afternoon left two pedestrians in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Interstate 189. The collision occurred shortly after 4:30 PM as the victims, 54-year-old April McMahon from St. Albans and 61-year-old Todd Brissette from Burlington, used a designated crosswalk near Route 7.
Both victims sustained severe injuries and were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center. McMahon is reported to have life-threatening injuries, while Brissette’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening. Authorities have stated that the driver of the pickup truck is not facing any charges at this time, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The accident has underscored concerns regarding pedestrian safety in the area. Local pedestrians have voiced their apprehensions about the dangers of crossing at this ramp. Residents like Brenda Freeman and Dan Magistrali have expressed the urgent need for safety improvements, advocating for better crosswalk signage or even a pedestrian bridge to ensure safer passage for walkers.
Freeman remarked, "It just doesn’t feel like a safe place to cross," highlighting the hazards posed by merging vehicles. Magistrali, who often walks in the vicinity, emphasized the risks, saying he prefers to run across the street due to safety fears. This incident is a call to action for local authorities to reassess pedestrian crossings and implement necessary changes to protect community members.
