Walmart recalls apple juice sold in 25 states due to high arsenic levels

[ad_1]
Walmart and a Dutch manufacturer are voluntarily recalling apple juice sold under Walmart’s “Great Value” brand due to elevated levels of arsenic. The products were sold in states on the East Coast and in the southern United States, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, in 8-ounce sizes and 6-pack plastic bottles. The arsenic levels, slightly above the FDA’s deemed safe level of 10 ppb, were found to be at about 13 ppb. The recall was categorized as Class II, indicating that it may cause temporary or reversible adverse health effects.

Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman stated that the health and safety of customers is a top priority, and they have removed the product from affected stores and are cooperating with the supplier to investigate the issue. Refresco, the Dutch manufacturer, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Inorganic arsenic can be traced to contaminated drinking water, and regular exposure to or consumption of it can lead to cancer and birth defects. The FDA advises against regular exposure to inorganic arsenic due to its harmful effects.
