Trump’s representative emphasizes verification as crucial aspect of Iran discussions

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff emphasized the importance of verification of Tehran’s enrichment and weaponization capabilities in any potential nuclear deal between the US and Iran. While describing the first meeting as positive and constructive, Witkoff stressed the need for Iran to limit its uranium enrichment to 3.67 percent, as outlined in the previous nuclear agreement that Trump withdrew from in 2018.

Witkoff highlighted concerns about Iran’s enrichment levels reaching up to 60 percent, close to the weapons-grade threshold of 90 percent. He also emphasized the necessity of verifying Iran’s weaponization capabilities, including their missile stockpiles and bomb triggers. The focus on verification, according to Witkoff, will be crucial in underpinning any future agreement with Iran.

The 2015 nuclear deal, which aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while allowing for a civil nuclear program, served as the backdrop for Witkoff’s comments. He suggested that the devil would be in the details of any formal document resulting from the negotiations but expressed hope for a successful outcome.

As talks continue between the US and Iran, the key point of focus, as reiterated by Witkoff, will be verification to ensure compliance with agreed-upon limits on enrichment and capabilities. The successful negotiation of a new agreement will depend on addressing these critical concerns to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
