Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys and Mid Vermont girls’ basketball coach Chris Goodwin will be available for media interviews following oral arguments in Mid Vermont Christian School v. Saunders at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit in New York on April 9th. The case involves the expulsion of Mid Vermont Christian School and its students from the Vermont athletics association due to their religious beliefs.
Mid Vermont Christian School, a faith-based pre-K-12 school, was kicked out of the athletic association in 2023 for forfeiting a basketball game against a team with a male athlete due to religious convictions. ADF Senior Counsel David Cortman will argue that the school should not be punished for adhering to their religious beliefs and should be allowed to participate in state-sponsored sports like other schools in Vermont.
Coach Chris Goodwin expressed his disappointment at being excluded from competitions for standing by his beliefs. The Vermont Principals’ Association’s policy allows males who identify as female to participate in girls’ sports, forcing Mid Vermont girls’ teams to compete against teams with male athletes. Despite 28 years of prior participation, the school is now barred from all VPA athletics, essentially blacklisting them from Vermont-sponsored sporting events.
