Kongsberg’s Discovery Technology Embarks on a Voyage Across the Ocean

Kongsberg Discovery has transformed the three-masted sailing ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl into a research vessel for the upcoming One Ocean Expedition, departing from Bergen, Norway on April 11. Equipped with advanced technology such as ADCPs, Echo Sounders, and the Seapath GNSS-aided navigation system, the ship will help scientists monitor unique ocean environments, including the Northwest Passage. Blue Insight, an ocean data management platform, will process and share data with land-based teams daily.

The expedition, spanning 26 ports across three continents, aims to collect data on ocean health, marine ecosystems, and the impact of climate change. Kongsberg Discovery’s technology will play a key role in measuring ocean currents and recording underwater noise to monitor pollution and marine mammals.

The voyage kicks off during One Ocean Week in Bergen, with stops in Reykjavik, Nuuk, Seattle, La Paz, Cartagena, Cadiz, Dublin, and Nice, where team members will participate in the 2025 UN Ocean Conference. The ship will return to Bergen in April 2026, coinciding with the next One Ocean Week.

Statsraad Lehmkuhl, Norway’s largest sailing ship, will serve as a vital tool for research and data collection throughout the expedition. The collaboration between Kongsberg Discovery and the expedition team highlights the importance of using technology to deepen our understanding of ocean environments and address pressing environmental issues.
