The Mid-Vermont Christian School’s girls’ basketball team remains banned from state competitions two years after forfeiting a game against a transgender rival, causing devastating consequences for the student-athletes. The team was punished for refusing to play against Long Trail due to a transgender player on the opposing team. The school filed a lawsuit against state officials after being kicked out of the Vermont Principals’ Association and barred from competitions indefinitely.
Coach Chris Goodwin emphasized the loss of opportunities for the players to achieve success and scholarships due to the ban. The legal battle to overturn the ban has now reached the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York City. The school is represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group. They argue that the ban is an unprecedented punishment and goes against the school’s beliefs that boys are boys and girls are girls.
The issue gained national attention with former President Donald Trump signing an executive order banning transgender athletes from women’s sports. Several states, including Vermont, have opposed this order and continue to allow trans athletes to compete based on their gender identity. Goodwin and his team are hopeful that they will prevail in their legal fight and secure an injunction to lift the ban, with the possibility of taking the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary.
