Spring turkey hunting season is right around the corner in Vermont, with youth and novice hunters gearing up for the opportunity to bag a bird. The youth and novice weekend is set for April 26 and 27, with the regular season running from May 1 to May 31. This weekend provides a chance for experienced hunters to mentor young or new hunters on the ways of safely and successfully hunting wild turkeys.
Youth hunters must be 15 or younger and have completed a hunter education course, while novice hunters must be 16 or older and have purchased their first hunting license in the past 12 months. Both groups will need a hunting license, turkey hunting license, and tags to participate. They must also be accompanied by an unarmed adult over 18 years old.
During the youth-novice weekend, hunters can take one bearded turkey, with the option to take two more during the regular season. The hunting hours vary for each weekend, with specific regulations on shot size and equipment. Hunters must report their harvest within 48 hours to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
Last year, over 5,000 bearded turkeys were harvested during the regular spring season, providing over 159,000 servings of locally sourced, free-range turkey meat. This success story highlights the conservation efforts that have helped Vermont’s turkey population thrive since 1969. The 2025 Turkey Hunting Guide is now available online for those interested in participating in this year’s season.
