Corissa Laws, a 38-year-old woman from Lawrenceville, Georgia, has been sentenced for identity theft after impersonating a licensed nurse to illegally practice in Vermont. Laws assumed the identity of a licensed Florida nurse in 2022 to obtain emergency authorization during the pandemic. This allowed her to fraudulently register as a nurse in Vermont and New Hampshire, where she worked in residential care facilities despite lacking the necessary training and certification.
The Vermont Secretary of State’s Office of Professional Regulation uncovered Laws’ true identity in April 2023 and referred the case to the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit. After locating Laws in Cobb County, Georgia, authorities arrested her and she pleaded guilty to felony identity theft and misdemeanor unauthorized practice of nursing.
Superior Court Judge Michael Harris sentenced Laws to three years in prison, suspended for six years of probation. Her supervision will be transferred to Georgia, where she faces additional charges. Laws is also prohibited from working as a Medicaid service provider in the future.
The Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit, which receives most of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, urges individuals to report any suspected Medicaid fraud through their website. Laws’ case serves as a warning about the consequences of identity theft and unauthorized practice in the healthcare industry.
