Tufts graduate student’s detention case moving to Vermont

Tufts University doctoral student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was recently detained by immigration authorities, had her case transferred to federal court in Vermont by U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper. Ozturk was detained by ICE officials in Massachusetts and later taken to an ICE facility in St. Albans before being flown to Louisiana, where she is currently held. Ozturk’s attorneys argued that she was unlawfully detained and should be released, claiming that she was targeted for exercising her free speech rights. Ozturk had co-written an op-ed criticizing Tufts University for their response to demands related to divesting from companies with ties to Israel. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had revoked Ozturk’s visa, citing her involvement in the pro-Palestinian movement on college campuses. However, friends and colleagues stated that Ozturk was not closely involved in the movement at Tufts. The incident of Ozturk’s arrest has sparked protests in the Boston area, and Vermont Governor Phil Scott criticized ICE’s actions, saying the country should be ashamed. The case will now be handled by the District of Vermont to determine if Ozturk’s rights were violated.
