The city of Burlington, Vermont, is considering joining the Situation Table initiative, a risk-based method that brings individuals or families in crisis in front of a task force comprised of various first-response agencies. The goal is to address the root causes of harm to those at high risk in the community. Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak mentioned the possibility of Burlington adopting this model during the State of the City address.
The Situation Table has already been implemented in other Vermont communities, such as Springfield, where it has shown promising results in addressing violence and providing support to those in need. Scott Allen, from Operation 2 Save Lives, travels around the country introducing this model to different communities.
Springfield Police Chief Jeff Burnham praised the effectiveness of the Situation Table, highlighting the collaborative and proactive approach of the task force in providing help without assigning blame. The chair of Springfield’s table, Michael Arace, emphasized the benefits of the model in correcting repeat offenders by addressing underlying issues.
There is no set timeline for Burlington to begin the process of implementing the Situation Table, but it is seen as a valuable tool that could benefit not only Vermont communities but also others across the nation. The initiative aims to create a supportive and collaborative environment to address and prevent crises within the community.
