Birmingham City Council has approved the use of ARPA funds to install a new alert system called Trainfo at train crossings in Birmingham. This technology uses cameras and sounds to notify drivers when a train is blocking a railroad crossing, helping to alleviate the frustration and inconvenience that many drivers in Birmingham currently face. It is the first time such a system will be installed in the state of Alabama.
Councilwoman Wardine Alexander has stated that the technology will automatically notify drivers when a train is stopped at a crossing, allowing them to find an alternate route before approaching the blocked train. This will not only benefit drivers but also help first responders by sending alerts to the Real-Time Crime Center so they can avoid a blockage and divert their route accordingly.
Trainfo will be installed at the same crossings where Qwick Curb is being installed, further enhancing safety measures at these locations. This new technology will provide a much-needed solution to the ongoing issue of train blockages in Birmingham, ultimately improving the efficiency of traffic flow and emergency response in the area.
