Investigation launched by Vermont State Police into inmate’s death

The Vermont State Police are investigating the death of James Ingerson, a 54-year-old inmate at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. Ingerson was found dead in his cell on Saturday morning after reporting feeling unwell. Despite receiving medical care, he was discovered unresponsive by his cellmate. DOC staff attempted life-saving measures but were unable to revive him. A preliminary investigation suggests the death is not suspicious, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. Ingerson was serving a sentence of one day to 10 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine. He had a minimum release date of Jan. 3, 2025, and was also facing a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Burlington had ordered him detained during those proceedings. The Vermont State Police have not provided further information at this time. The incident has raised concerns about the care and treatment of inmates in Vermont correctional facilities.
