Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals scored in league history with his 894th goal on Friday. The milestone goal was scored against the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding numerous other scoring records including most power-play goals and most goals scored for a single team. He is currently third in the NHL in goals this season and has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies, most recently in 2020. Ovechkin is a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy that year. Despite not making it past the first round of the playoffs since their championship win, the Capitals are currently leading the Eastern Conference and second in the NHL overall this season. Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and his contract with Washington runs through the 2025-26 season.
