Local farmers in Central Vermont now have a new headquarters for their products with the opening of a 22,000 square foot food hub in Hardwick. This project, seven years in the making, aims to make it easier for farmers to distribute their products statewide. The facility has already helped over 100 local farms store and distribute their food since opening just a few weeks ago.
Vermont’s secretary of agriculture, Anson Tebbetts, highlighted that one of the biggest challenges farmers face is getting their products to market, and this food hub will address that issue. The goal of the project is to connect the community to local agriculture and broaden the market for Vermont farms in the coming years.
The non-profit organization behind the food hub, Center for an Agricultural Economy, is excited about the potential impact on local farmers. Jasper Hill Farm, a well-known farm in the village of Greensboro, will be utilizing the hub to store their inventory and distribute products like their famous cheese.
Executive director Jon Ramsay encourages local farms and businesses to reach out and learn more about how the food hub can benefit them. Through this new facility, farmers will have a safe place to house their products and access to distribution services across the state. Those interested in learning more about the food hub can visit the CAE website for more information.
