Preston Flanders, a senior at Mill River Union High School in Vermont, is facing controversy over his senior portrait that features him holding a firearm. Despite Flanders’ passion for hunting and his desire to showcase it in his senior photo, the school has refused to allow the picture in the yearbook. The principal cited safety concerns as the reason for denying the photo, although there is no specific policy prohibiting guns in yearbook photos.
Preston’s father, Nick Flanders, who is also a member of the school board, has raised the issue at recent meetings in hopes of convincing the board to intervene. However, as of now, no action has been taken by the school board regarding the inclusion of the photo in the yearbook.
While the superintendent of Mill River Union High School has stated that there have been no decisions made by the board on this matter, he did mention that more specific guidelines will be created for senior portraits for next year’s class.
Preston Flanders expressed his disappointment over not being able to use his passion for hunting in his senior photo, especially when other students are able to showcase their interests in sports or other activities. As he looks for an alternate senior portrait, the issue remains unresolved at Mill River Union High School.
