Search for 4 Missing U.S. Soldiers in Lithuania Intensified with Specialized Divers and Additional Equipment

A search is ongoing for four U.S. Army soldiers who went missing during a training session in Lithuania when their M88 Hercules armored vehicle became submerged in a peat bog. The soldiers, who are from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, have not been identified. Specialized divers from the U.S. Navy’s Commander Task Force 68 have joined the search effort, along with over 50 Polish engineers and recovery experts and Lithuanian geologists. Equipment such as heavy trucks, tracked recovery vehicles, and sonar devices are being used to assist in the search. The goal is to find lifting points on the submerged vehicle and prepare for dive operations. Helicopters, including UH-60M Blackhawks for medical evacuation and CH-47 Chinooks for heavy lifting, are also being utilized in the search. The search efforts on Saturday focused on removing water and mud from the site, shoring up the ground, and preparing for dive operations. The U.S. Army, Europe, and Africa are coordinating with the Lithuanian armed forces and law enforcement in the search and recovery operation. Additional updates on the search and recovery efforts are expected as the operation continues.
