Former Vermont school teacher, Matthew Toof, is currently facing charges of sexually assaulting one of his students over the course of several years. The jury began deliberations late Friday afternoon after hearing testimony from both the prosecution and the defense.
The alleged assaults date back to 2021 when Toof, a former sixth-grade teacher at Georgia Elementary School, reportedly assaulted the victim multiple times starting when she was just 11 years old. The acts are said to have taken place at school, the victim’s home, and on vacations.
During the trial, Toof denied all allegations against him, calling them “ludicrous.” His attorney, Robert Kaplan, argued that there is not enough evidence to prove the claims against his client, referring to Toof as the “Barney Fife of infidelity.” Deputy State’s Attorney Diane Wheeler, on the other hand, emphasized the severity of the alleged actions, stating that it was Toof’s “end desire” to engage in sexual acts with the victim.
Due to the sensitive nature of the case, WCAX News does not identify victims of alleged abuse. The jury will now determine Toof’s guilt or innocence based on the evidence presented during the trial. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
