Expansion of Brattleboro’s pre-k program sees continued growth and success, resulting in flourishing students | Local News

Efforts are underway at the Brattleboro Early Childhood Center at the Canal Street Schoolhouse to add a second classroom in order to expand pre-k offerings in Brattleboro. Superintendent Mark Speno hopes to have as many as 30 pre-k students at the site next year, with Oak Grove School no longer running a pre-k classroom. The center will also provide open spots for children receiving special education services.

Tours of the schoolhouse are being offered to interested families, with open house events planned. Speno praised the energy and support at the site, highlighting the positive impact on the children. The teachers, including Lauren Perlstein and Melissa Cavanagh, are excited about the new space and opportunities it provides for the students.

The transition to a new food service model run in-house is in progress, with future educational opportunities and food offerings planned for the basement kitchen. The schoolhouse has a rich history, with a focus on restoring and preserving it. The playground has been renovated to cater specifically to pre-k students, providing a safe and engaging environment.

Overall, the expansion of the pre-k program at the Canal Street Schoolhouse aims to create a nurturing and supportive learning environment for young children in Brattleboro. Families interested in the program are encouraged to reach out to Oak Grove School for more information.
