Vermont Senate Approves Bill Prohibiting Cities and Towns from Banning Face Masks

In a recent Senate Government Operations Committee meeting, Vermont lawmakers discussed a bill, S.81, that would prevent municipalities from banning hygienic face masks. The bill, sponsored by 15 senators from all three major parties, aims to give individuals the freedom to make their own decisions regarding mask-wearing in public spaces. While there are currently no communities in the state with mask-wearing restrictions, legislators believe proactive measures are necessary, especially given recent proposals and enactments of public face mask bans in other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the state is facing a budget adjustment stalemate, primarily centered around the motel voucher program for unhoused individuals. Democrats are pushing for an extension of the program for all unhoused people in motels, while Republicans want to maintain restrictions on motel stays. The disagreement needs to be resolved quickly to avoid evictions starting on April 1.

Additionally, the House recently approved a bill, H.474, that would make significant changes to the state’s election laws. One key provision would prevent candidates who lose a major party primary from appearing on the general election ballot for another party or as an independent. The bill also includes measures to enhance finance disclosure requirements for candidates. The bill is expected to move to the Senate for further consideration.

In other news, Lt. Gov. John Rodgers and Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas joined other political figures and media leaders in calling for increased investment in Vermont news organizations through a proposed bill, H.244. This legislation aims to ensure that the state spends at least 70% of its advertising dollars with in-state media, providing vital support to local journalism.
