Leveraging technology to support individuals with dementia in aging in place

A new network led by Heriot-Watt University, the University of Strathclyde, and Age Scotland aims to explore how technology can enhance the lives of people with dementia. The CONSOLIDATE network, funded with £2 million, is part of a larger initiative by UKRI’s EPSRC and NIHR in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society to develop technologies promoting independent living for individuals with dementia.

With around one million people in the UK currently diagnosed with dementia, the network aims to address the projected increase to 1.4 million by 2040. The focus is on designing technologies driven by the needs and aspirations of those affected by dementia, with a survey showing that 85% of individuals would prefer to stay at home if diagnosed with the condition.

The network will focus on enhancing functional capacities for people with dementia, with an emphasis on personalized care that adapts to changing needs. Partner organizations include Alzheimer Scotland, Meeting Centres Scotland, Carers Scotland, and NHS Boards. People living with dementia will be central to the research and design process, ensuring solutions are accessible and tailored to their unique needs.

By incorporating input from various disciplines and prioritizing the preferences of individuals living with dementia, the network aims to develop technologies that support independence and improve quality of life. The focus is on personalized care to enable individuals to live independently for as long as possible while maintaining their abilities and engagement.

The EPSRC Executive Chair emphasized the importance of investing in research to address the growing challenge of dementia, highlighting the impact of new technologies in keeping people safe and independent. The network invites individuals and groups to join CONSOLIDATE to participate in shaping activities and apply for research funding.
