After 22 years of serving the people of Burlington, longtime city councilor Joan Shannon has decided not to seek re-election for her seat on the council. Shannon, who previously served as city council president and ran for mayor in 2024, was honored in a meeting on Monday by city council president Ben Traverse and former city council members. Residents also took the time during public comment to bid her farewell and thank her for her dedication to the city.
Former Burlington councilor Jane Knodell praised Shannon for her clarity and conviction, stating that when she speaks, everyone knows exactly where she stands. Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak awarded Shannon with a plaque for her commitment to the city, and she was met with a standing ovation from the room.
The South District seat, previously held by Shannon, was won by Democrat Buddy Singh on Town Meeting Day. Shannon’s decision not to seek re-election marks the end of an era in Burlington politics, as she leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to her community.
Shannon’s departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the council chambers, but her impact on the city and its residents will never be forgotten. As Burlington moves forward with new leadership, Shannon’s years of experience and passion for serving the people will be remembered as a guiding light for those who follow in her footsteps.
