In a north Texas farming community, two Jain monks and documentary filmmakers, Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhuti, found themselves on a spiritual journey of a different kind as they experienced perimenopause symptoms. Shree, a former Iraqi War veteran, and Anubhuti discovered their hormone imbalances after experiencing various symptoms such as insomnia, fatigue, and mood changes. These symptoms prompted them to seek hormone level tests, revealing low levels of progesterone and estrogen, respectively.
Their experiences shed light on perimenopause, a transitional period that can cause various symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, and sleep disturbances. Despite the common misconception that menopause occurs around age 51, many women, including those in their 30s and 40s, can experience perimenopausal symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy and natural remedies helped Shree and Anubhuti manage their symptoms.
The monks, known for helping people with anxiety and PTSD, decided to raise awareness about perimenopause through a documentary series called “Balance.” By sharing their medical journey and interviewing menopause experts, they hoped to educate and support other women going through similar experiences. Collaborating with women’s health advocates like Stephanie Collins, they aimed to change the narrative around midlife women’s health and encourage better support and treatment options.
In reflecting on their perimenopause journey, Shree and Anubhuti emphasized the importance of addressing women’s health issues like perimenopause to reduce the pain and suffering often associated with this natural transition. Their efforts to raise awareness and provide support through their documentary series and community screenings exemplify their commitment to helping women navigate through perimenopause with knowledge, support, and compassion.
