Young Writers Project is an online community of teen writers and artists based in Burlington, Vermont. Each week, VTDigger publishes the work of young Vermonters from the Young Writers Project website. The featured poet this week, Sela Morgenstein Fuerst, celebrates the beauty of Vermont’s landscapes and communities in response to the Tomorrow Project, an initiative to empower young voices.
Fuerst’s poem highlights what it means to be a Vermonter, from experiencing the changing seasons to knowing your neighbors and participating in local events. Being a Vermonter involves embracing the natural beauty of the state, from snow-covered mountains to summer days on Lake Champlain. It also means being part of a close-knit community and participating in civic engagement activities like attending Pride Parades and joining webinars with local leaders.
The poem captures the essence of Vermont life, from the idyllic scenes of autumn leaves and snow-covered mountains to the sense of community and belonging that comes with being a Vermonter. Through beautiful imagery and heartfelt words, Fuerst’s poem reflects the deep connection Vermonters have to their state and the pride they feel in calling it home.
