The Department of Public Safety in Waterbury has announced the selection of Lisa Milot to lead the newly established Division of Animal Welfare. Beginning her role in May, Milot, a faculty member at the University of Georgia School of Law with a focus on animal welfare policy, will work to coordinate animal welfare services throughout Vermont. With experience at the federal level and a background in the Georgia state animal welfare movement, Milot aims to collaborate with volunteers and professionals to improve animal welfare in the state.
Deputy Commissioner Batsie highlighted Milot’s comprehensive skill set and spirit of collaboration, believing that her leadership will unite stakeholders in Vermont’s animal welfare community. The Division of Animal Welfare was established under legislation passed in 2024, with Milot tasked with developing a plan for implementing and enforcing animal welfare laws in the state, as well as overseeing investigations and responses to animal cruelty complaints statewide.
The Department of Public Safety is optimistic that Milot’s approach will serve as a model for other states seeking to enhance animal welfare initiatives. Director Milot expressed her eagerness to work with the dedicated individuals who advocated for the creation of her position, emphasizing the connection between animal welfare and human welfare. With her expertise and passion for the cause, Milot is poised to make a significant impact on advancing animal welfare in Vermont.
