Trump administration terminates temporary status for 530,000 Cubans, Venezuelans and other nationals

The Trump administration is ending temporary legal status for over 530,000 individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who arrived in the U.S. through Biden-era temporary parole programs. The parole programs will officially end on April 24, according to a Federal Register document. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the termination of these programs fulfills President Trump’s directive to end categorical parole programs not aligned with U.S. policies. The Department of Homeland Security will work to remove individuals who do not leave before the parole is terminated. Those who have obtained lawful immigration status are not required to depart.

The parole programs, which allowed migrants to stay in the U.S. for up to two years, had been implemented during the Biden administration. Migrants had to undergo background checks, have a financial sponsor, and receive work authorization. The Biden administration had initially started a parole policy for Venezuelans, later expanding it to include Nicaraguans, Haitians, and Cubans.

A senior DHS official criticized the parole programs as “disastrous” and a return to common-sense policies and public safety. Previous efforts by the Trump administration to curtail parole programs faced legal challenges, including a class action lawsuit filed against the Trump administration last month. Megan Lebowitz is a politics reporter for NBC News, and Julia Ainsley and Daniella Silva also contributed to the report.
