Elon Musk’s X has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government’s IT ministry, accusing it of unlawfully expanding censorship powers to make it easier to remove online content. The lawsuit alleges that the ministry has empowered “countless” government officials to execute orders to take down content without the necessary legal safeguards. X argues that the ministry is using a government website launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs to issue content blocking orders without proper oversight.
The lawsuit marks an escalation in a legal dispute between X and the Indian government over content removal orders. The case was briefly heard by a judge in the High Court of southern Karnataka state, with a final decision scheduled for March 27. X, formerly known as Twitter, was previously locked in a standoff with the Indian government over noncompliance with legal orders to block tweets related to a farmers’ protest. While X eventually complied, it is continuing its legal challenge in Indian courts.
The lawsuit comes as Elon Musk is preparing to launch his ventures, Starlink and Tesla, in India. X alleges that the government’s actions create “unrestrained censorship of information in India” and is seeking to quash the directive. The Indian IT ministry redirected a request for comment to the home affairs ministry, which did not respond to the allegations.
