Green Mountain Republicans are calling for the discipline or resignation of two Democratic lawmakers for their alleged involvement in disrupting an event at the Vermont State House hosted by the Vermont Family Alliance for “Detrans Awareness Day.” State Reps. Mari Cordes and Jubilee McGill are accused of coordinating the disruption, which included men dressed in women’s clothing singing loudly and shouting to drown out the speaker from the Vermont Family Alliance.
Vermont Republican Party Chair Paul Dame accused the lawmakers of deliberately sabotaging a peaceful meeting and called on House Speaker Jill Krowinski to consider disciplining them. The disrupted meeting aimed to highlight resources for individuals who had detransitioned to their biological sex and were facing aftereffects of transgender surgeries.
Despite some criticism of the Sergeant-at-Arms’ handling of the situation, Dame praised her for handling the incident responsibly. Democratic leaders Kesha Ram Hinsdale and Lori Houghton emphasized their commitment to the rights and freedoms of all Vermonters, stating that personal health decisions and gender identity should be free from public scrutiny.
Renee McGuinness, the speaker at the disrupted event, demanded an apology from the Democratic leaders for mischaracterizing their event as an attack on the transgender community. While GOP Governor Phil Scott did not provide a comment on the situation, the incident has sparked controversy and debate among lawmakers in Vermont.
