La Verne Maria Shelton, known by her initials LVM or Elviem, passed away on February 15, 2025, after a battle with cancer. She was born on May 23, 1945, in Louisville, Kentucky, and lived a vibrant life filled with music, academics, and spiritual practice. La Verne had a distinguished career, obtaining a PhD in philosophy and teaching at various institutions. She also had a passion for music, playing multiple instruments and singing in choruses.

In her retirement in Vermont, La Verne continued her involvement in Quakerism, music, and writing. She had a deep connection to her spiritual beliefs and shared her knowledge and experiences with others. La Verne will be remembered by her niece, sister-in-law, and many friends and Quaker colleagues. A memorial service in her honor will be held on May 26, 2025, organized by Plainfield Monthly Meeting and Burlington Friends Meeting.

La Verne’s legacy includes her dedication to education, music, and spiritual growth, leaving a lasting impact on those she encountered. Her life was marked by a strong sense of community and support for others, making her passing a loss to many. More information about the memorial service will be available in April on her Caringbridge site. The world has lost a remarkable individual, but her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched.
