In a touching display of solidarity and respect, law enforcement and emergency vehicles from both sides of the U.S.-Canada border gathered in Derby Line to honor the life and service of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland. Agent Maland, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 20, 2025, was laid to rest with full military honors at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Weeks later, a procession of over one-hundred vehicles paid tribute to him in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, led by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Homeland Security, Vermont State Police, and other agencies. The procession traveled from the Border Patrol Station in Derby to the Port of Entry before being joined by vehicles from the Canada Border Services Agency.
The service was held at the Faith Lighthouse Church in Newport, where a packed room of over 500 people gathered to remember Agent Maland. Born in Blue Earth, MN, Maland had a distinguished career serving in the U.S. Air Force and the State Department before joining the U.S. Border Patrol. As a K9 handler, he worked at the Pentagon and responded to the events of 9/11. After transferring to Newport in 2019, he served as a Border Patrol Agent, K9 Agent, and member of the Mobile Response Team.
Agent Maland’s dedication and sacrifice were evident in the overwhelming show of support and gratitude from his fellow law enforcement officers and the community. His memory and service will not be forgotten as his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
