80% Containment of Long Island Brush Fire that has Charred 400 Acres

A brush fire in Westhampton Beach, New York has burned 400 acres and prompted a response from 80 fire departments and 600 personnel, but is now 80% contained according to Suffolk County officials. The fire, known as the Westhampton Pines Fire, is fully knocked down and no longer visible. Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a prohibition on most types of outside fires in Long Island and parts of the Hudson Valley due to dry conditions. The cause of the fire is still unclear, despite investigators working to determine its origin.

The fire affected two commercial buildings, with one being fairly destroyed. Two fire personnel were injured, with one sustaining second-degree burns and the other a head injury. Despite the damage caused by the fire, residents are grateful that the situation did not get worse.

The fires burned a total of 600 to 700 acres in Suffolk County, with only the Westhampton blaze still burning by Sunday night. Conditions were expected to improve, with winds calming, temperatures decreasing, and the possibility of rain in the coming days. Local officials, including Governor Hochul and Senator Schumer, have expressed gratitude for the efforts of volunteers and responders in containing the fire. The President’s team also reached out to offer support.
