Mikaela Shiffrin breaks World Cup podium record with 3rd place finish in slalom race

Mikaela Shiffrin achieved her 156th World Cup podium finish, breaking a record previously held by Ingemar Stenmark. Despite leading after the first run, Shiffrin finished third in the slalom race, with Katharina Truppe capturing her first-ever World Cup win. Shiffrin expressed her pride in her performance after returning from a serious crash in November. Truppe’s victory was described as “crazy” and emotional for her, as she had been sixth-fastest in the morning run. Both Truppe and Shiffrin, aged 29, had previously won medals at junior world championships, but their careers had followed different paths. Shiffrin needed a victory to stay in contention for a ninth season-long slalom title but missed out by finishing third. With Petra Vlhova absent due to injury, the competition for the slalom title this season is open. The season-ending race in Sun Valley presents an opportunity for four skiers to lift the crystal globe trophy, including contenders Zrinka Ljutic and Camille Rast, who struggled in the recent race. Ljutic leads the standings ahead of Rast and can win the title with a top-three finish. Shiffrin plans to train in Europe before heading to the United States for the final race, looking forward to the challenge despite the long travel distance.
