NYSCOPBA states that talks between ‘outside parties’ and DOCCS are not official.

The New York State corrections officers’ union, NYSCOPBA, has clarified recent unsanctioned negotiations with outside parties attempting to negotiate with the Department of Corrections and Community Services on behalf of officers still on strike. A group of officers voted on new negotiations but the union stated they were not properly involved in the development of the agreement. The union emphasized that the agreement was never negotiated with NYSCOPBA, the legally recognized entity for negotiations. Despite rumors that officers would return to work under new safety regulations, the striking officers are determined to remain off the job.

The situation comes after a mediation agreement was reached last week between NYSCOPBA and DOCCS, and as termination letters have been sent to striking officers. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand expressed concerns about the state of New York’s justice system amidst the ongoing strikes and protests. Former corrections officer and Democratic Assemblyman Billy Jones emphasized the need for action to ensure the safety of correctional facility workers.

NYSCOPBA has stated they will not sign the proposed agreement and are working to reopen the Consent Award process with a mediator for a legally binding agreement. While unsanctioned votes are occurring at other prisons in Northern New York, NYSCOPBA is actively engaging with the Department of Corrections. Officers who choose to return to work could have their health insurance reinstated. The union remains committed to representing the best interests of their membership and ensuring a fair resolution is reached.
