Vermont Public is bringing the principles of StoryCorps’ One Small Step initiative to Bristol, Vt. on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2024. The event will take place at the Bristol Fire Department from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited, so attendees are encouraged to reserve their tickets in advance.
The goal of One Small Step is to bridge the political divide by guiding individuals through conversations that seek common ground and elevate the humanity in one another. Participants will start the evening with pizza, followed by training on how to have a One Small Step conversation. They will then be paired up to practice what they have learned in short conversations.
The initiative aims to combat the polarizing effects of news and social media by encouraging individuals to engage in one-on-one conversations and get to know each other as people, rather than focusing on political debates. By approaching each other with curiosity, participants often realize they have more in common than they think.
This event is made possible with support from Vermont Humanities and is the first stop on Vermont Public’s journey to take One Small Step on the road in 2025. For those interested in hosting a similar event in their community, they can reach out to Vermont Public via email.
Attendees are advised to enter the facility from Firehouse Drive and park in designated spaces behind the fire station.
