After 26 years of teaching University of Vermont students about the ski industry, Senior Lecturer Dave Kaufman has had a lasting impact on the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism program. The Ski Area Management course, started by Al Gilbert, provides students with hands-on experiences at Stowe Mountain Resort, Bolton Valley Resort, and Sugarbush Resort, exposing students to various operations and business models.
The ski industry faces challenges due to climate change, making adaptability crucial. Snowmaking technology has allowed Vermont ski areas to remain profitable even in low snow years. Students in the course have gained a deeper understanding of the hard work and environmental considerations involved in running a ski resort.
Kaufman’s extensive industry relationships have been instrumental in the success of the course, with many alumni finding jobs in Vermont and across the country. Notable alumni, such as John Hammond and Stefanie Berlow, credit the course for preparing them for careers in the ski industry.
As Kaufman prepares to retire in May 2025, Professor Jon Erickson will take over instruction of the Ski Area Management course. Kaufman’s passion for the industry and dedication to preparing students for successful careers in recreation and tourism have left a lasting legacy on the program and the ski industry as a whole. His students continue to find work in the industry they love, showcasing the impact of his teachings over the past 25 years.
