Millions at Risk as Major Storm Brings Severe Weather and Heightens Wildfire Danger

A major winter storm is expected to bring severe weather and potential power outages to much of the country this week, affecting almost two dozen states. The storm will bring heavy snow, strong winds, and blizzard conditions to parts of the Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, and Rockies. Up to 170 million people could be impacted, with winds as strong as 70 mph causing power outages in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and the Northeast. In addition to the winter storm, Southern states face a critical risk of wildfires due to dry air, strong winds, and low humidity. A state of emergency has been declared in South Carolina, where multiple wildfires are burning. The fires are expected to be replaced by rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. The storm will also bring severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible tornadoes to the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley. Flash flooding could occur in areas with heavy rain, such as Ohio and Tennessee. The disruptive weather has the potential to cause travel delays and flight cancellations.
