The Pentagon to deploy close to 3,000 extra active-duty troops to the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as President Donald Trump aims to crack down on illegal immigration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered elements of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion for the mission. The troops, arriving in the coming weeks, will come from Fort Carson and Fort Stewart. The Strykers will provide transportation, engineering support, detection, and monitoring, while the aviation brigade will assist with movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies. These forces will join the 9,200 U.S. troops already at the border. The goal is to reinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States. Trump is determined to increase the military’s role in shutting down the border and deporting detained migrants back to their home countries. Military personnel have been periodically deployed to the border since the 1990s to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. This new deployment comes as part of Trump’s longstanding campaign promise to address illegal immigration.
