In response to Vice President JD Vance’s ski trip to Sugarbush resort in Vermont, more than a thousand protesters gathered in the Mad River Valley to express their concerns about the Trump administration. The demonstrations included signs and flags highlighting issues such as democracy, climate change, and LGBTQ+ rights. Protest organizers emphasized the importance of protesting, voting, and legal actions to resist policies they fear may harm Vermonters.
The protests drew attention to recent federal funding cuts and worker layoffs under the Trump and Vance administration, with many expressing outrage at the handling of international affairs, such as the clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Participants from various Indivisible groups and national protest movements joined forces to ensure a safe demonstration.
In addition to the main protest in Waitsfield, a smaller but significant rally in Warren focused on demanding an end to funding for the Israeli government and promoting a free and liberated Palestine. Counter-protesters displaying support for Vance and Trump also made their presence known.
Despite some contentious interactions, both on the streets and at the ski resort where Vance was rumored to be skiing, the protests proceeded peacefully. The community’s vocal opposition to the administration’s policies reflects a growing sense of concern and urgency among Vermonters regarding the current state of affairs. Sugarbush Resort, where Vance was visiting, did not provide immediate comment on the protests.
