Vermont sees an increase in sports betting handle in January compared to last year

Vermont’s sports betting handle saw a significant increase of 20 per cent in January 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, reaching $23.9m. Despite a slight decrease of 2.1 per cent from December, the adjusted gross wagering revenue rose by 56 per cent to $2.5m. The top five sports in terms of betting volume were basketball, football, tennis, hockey, and soccer, with basketball leading the market with $7.18m in bets.

The Vermont Department for Liquor and Lottery reported that $14.09m was wagered in-state, while $9.7m came from out-of-state bets. There were 35,772 active users, with a higher number of out-of-state users compared to in-state users. The total number of bets placed was 913,985, with a majority coming from in-state users.

Between January and December 2024, bettors in Vermont spent $198m on sports betting, with winnings totaling $17m. However, there are concerns regarding the future of sports betting in the state as three House representatives have proposed a ban on the activity just a year after it was legalized. The bill is currently under review by the House Committee on Government Operations and Military Affairs, although the chances of it advancing are slim.
