Secretary of State reverses decision on Bennington election revote

After a close election in the Bennington-1 district of Vermont, Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas initially called for a revote due to errors on the voter checklist that may have impacted the outcome. However, upon further review, she realized that the decision to revote actually rested with the legislature, not the courts. This led to a discussion among lawmakers about the pros and cons of a revote, considering the costs and potential lower turnout of a special election.

The error stemmed from new legislative districts created in 2022, with a line dividing the district in Pownal leading to misallocated ballots. Despite the potential for 56 voters to receive the wrong ballot, lawmakers ultimately decided to accept the flawed results and allow Cooper to retain his seat. They also agreed to work on changes to election laws to prevent similar errors in the future.

Some Republicans criticized Copeland Hanzas for changing her position, causing confusion and setting expectations for a revote that may not happen. Lawmakers acknowledged that whatever decision they made, there would be strong opinions on both sides. In the end, the majority voted against a revote, citing the impracticality and challenges of trying to correct the errors that occurred in the election. The focus now shifts to preventing similar issues in future elections through legislative changes.
